How Floors for paws is installed

Preparation is the key to longevity
The fitting or Floors for Paws dry back luxury vinyl plank or tile (LVP or LVT) is a straightforward process when the right preparation is done. This glue-down system provides a durable, water-resistant and stable surface, perfect for homes with pets. Below is a step-by-step guide for how it is installed over concrete subfloors and wooden floorboards, ensuring a smooth and lasting finish.
Preparation: tools and materials needed
Materials:
• Floors for Paws dry back LVP/LVT
• Flooring adhesive (Floors for Paws recommended)
• Primer (for concrete subfloors)
• Self-levelling compound
Installing over a concrete subfloor
Step 1: Check and prepare the concrete
A clean, dry, and level subfloor is essential. Sweep or vacuum to remove dust and debris. Check for moisture—concrete should have a moisture level below 75% RH. If levels are too high, a damp-proof membrane will be needed.
If the concrete is uneven, a self-levelling compound will be required.
Step 2: Apply a primer before self-levelling
On porous concrete, applying a latex-based or acrylic primer will help the self-levelling compound bond properly. Roll on the primer evenly and allow it to dry, usually 1-4 hours depending on manufacturer recommendations.
Step 3: Use self-levelling compound if needed
If the floor isn’t perfectly smooth, pour and spread a self-levelling compound over the primed surface, using a trowel and levelling rake. Let it cure for at least 24 hours before proceeding. It is usually dry enough for foot and paws traffic after 2-3 hours.
Step 4: Apply the adhesive
Use a pressure-sensitive or full-spread adhesive, as recommended by Floors for Paws. Spread it evenly with a trowel, working in sections to prevent it from drying too quickly. Allow it to become tacky before laying the planks.
Step 5: Lay the planks
Start in the centre of the room and work outward, ensuring planks are staggered for a natural wood effect or brick bond for stone effect tiles. Press each plank firmly into the adhesive, avoiding gaps.
Step 6: Roll the floor
Once all planks are down, roll the entire floor with a 50-100 lb roller to secure the bond and remove air pockets.
Step 7: Allow time for the adhesive to set
Keep foot and paws traffic off the floor for as long as possible and avoid moving heavy furniture for 48 hours to allow full curing.
Option 2: Installing over wooden floorboards
Step 1: Prepare the subfloor
Check that the existing floorboards are stable, flat, and secure. If there are loose boards, fix them with screws.
For gaps or uneven surfaces, install a Flooring grade 6mm plywood underlayment to create a smooth base. Secure the plywood with screws and fill joins with Ardex feather finish.
Step 2: Apply the adhesive
Spread the adhesive evenly over the prepared surface with an A2 trowel. Follow the same process as for a concrete subfloor, ensuring tacky consistency before laying planks.
Step 3: Lay the planks
Lay the planks in the same way as for a concrete installation, ensuring a tight fit with staggered joints.
Step 4: Roll and cure
Use a floor roller to ensure full adhesion and remove air pockets.
Final checks and best practices
• Acclimatise the flooring by storing it in the installation room for at least 24 hours before fitting.
• Use only the recommended adhesive to ensure proper bonding.
• Trim carefully around edges and obstacles for a neat finish.
• Check moisture levels to prevent adhesive failure over time.
With the correct preparation and method, Floors for Paws dry back LVP provides a secure, long-lasting finish, maintenance-free flooring ideal for homes with pets that lasts furever.
